Fuzzy Cloaks- "Solar Hits"

Psych-pop jam band out of Seattle on Kind Turkey Records.

Heavy on the reverbed vocals, loose on the structure.

From the frontman of THE PHARMACY comes 8 lo-fi tracks out of a hazy green smoke.

All the tracks suffer from the lo-fi recording, although live I can see these guys working a crowd into a slow groove, too mellow for the cocktails and cocaine crowd, but I think the domestic beer and weed types would dig them.

The tape is worth buying at 4 dollars plus shipping if only for the track "April Anne"- a calm love eulogy, and the final track "Love What I Do"- one minute of jerry lee lewis piano riffs.

I'm not really running this blog anymore... I got called out for linking to an album and it made me feel like shit- Esp because it was someone from a label I really respect. So, here's the thing: I keep getting updates from various labels through my email account and I really appreciate it, really, it's nice. BUT, I'm no writer...If you want your band to get some coverage so they can get some cash to tour or sell some y inches send your shit to Niche Homo, Terminal Boredom , VOT, or MMR. I'm a nobody who didn't go to school to write, review or give a shit. I can't make you famous. I don't network. I don't own a label.

On the other hand... Kind Turkey Records sent me some really great music and because I like to get free shit I'm going to post some of the freebies they sent me. Really, It's good, I'm not saying it to be a firsty or what not. I don't give a fuck. Really. Consider this Jew guilt. Oh, yeah...I'm Jew too...that can't be cool...

Here's the review written by some guy from KTR,

Two Tears is KERRY DAVIS of the legendary RED AUNTS (Epitaph and Sympathy for the Record Industry). She also played with Mick Collins in THE SCREWS (In The Red Records). This is Kerry's latest single and follows her early 2010 single on Windian Records. This single features 3 of Kerry's raddest garage rockers. Three songs that were written and recorded in 3 different continents (The specific cities they were written in were Paris, Dubai and New York City). Art was designed by Kerry herself, and is hand numbered. Limited to 500 copies. First 100 on Pink/White mixed vinyl.

I wanted to write you about the new 7" I put out on my label by Milwaukee's Trent Fox and the Tenants. It's 5 tracks of garage/pop/rock n roll with swagger. Release date is FEBRUARY 22nd. We're having 4 release shows in Wisconsin over a 3 day period (Madison, Milwaukee, Appleton, and Green Bay).
I have attached the lead-off track, a one-sheet for the release, a picture of the vinyl, and the album art.

This is the debut 7" from this Milwaukee band known for running the venerable basement space, The Vault, where touring bands are always sure to stop. They've played a multitude of shows around the Midwest and are planning a tour this summer. Most notably they've played with Nobunny, Holly Golightly, Jaill, Wheels on Fire, Mondo Topless, Lover!, Thomas Function and plenty more!

So thanks to distro's like Kind Turkey Records you get to enjoy more of the great music coming out of the U.S. of A. This is some great stuff. We are all lucky to have such nice people to send us this stuff for free. Do your part and help them out by picking one of these up. Here's my little write up:

Wheels on fire play on 50's Motown, 60's psychedelic, and gutter-punk. I know that sounds like a weird combination but this 7 inch is so eclectic for just 4 songs it's ridiculous that they pull it off... really really well. Impressed by the goofy lyrics and catchy guitar riffs, I might even go as far to say I find it charming. To put it simply...This 7" is really damn fun. Check it out.

Thanks to all the new emails I'm receiving I can share some new music with everyone. Look out for The Downbeats new MP3 (It's so damn good) and a review of Balkans coming later.

The N.E.C.

Hailing from Atlanta The N.E.C. is a band that you could lump in with Deerhunter, No Age, the Black Angels, and even Woven Bones... and you'd be right, well almost. The N.E.C. isn't really introspective like Deerhunter is (or was) and they aren't as poppy as No Age, and sure they are psychedelic but they are no where as annoying as the Black Angles. Instead The N.E.C. lies somewhere in between the genre lines. They are in essence what I would listen to when I was stoned. Now first don't take that as a bad thing, and don't bite my head off just yet. The first track is so exciting that I can't help but nerd out and bob my head up and down like I'm 15. It's good and super cool and they play the instruments like they are fighting with them all the while the lead singer is chanting along with music as if he were going trough a trip. The first track is the catalyst for the 'trip' that is the rest of the album. From the second track on you are in an ethereal soundscape of noise and psychedelic ambiance and scattered in are tracks of literally ambiance. Thank god for the last song otherwise, I'd be stuck in a daze. The last track is brilliant; You wake up and out of the dream and at the very last of it you get a chance to reflect on what you've just heard. Try it baby.

Here's some cool info that you might not know about. You know those guys from Rock N Roll Adventure Kids? Well, they are in a new band called Scumby. Don't go and googlebing them yet or you'll stumble on some ridiculously sad music by bands of the same name. But, look out for any of their releases...I saw them in San Francisco with Nobunny and The Spits and they were great. Downside, I asked them if they had anything put down on vinyl or mp3 and they said not yet. So... look for it.

Here are a few more movie recommendations. These are pretty fun. In the Fall starting in August if you are in the Dallas area there will be some films playing in the basement of J&J's Pizza in Denton once I get around to talking to them. We've got a projector and a pretty good collection of movies so it's going to be good. My buddy Aaron will probably be showing slashers and giallos while I'll be showing action and grind house flicks. I'll keep you posted.

The album photo I stole from Midheaven could really use some help. I know they are a good band and I trust their decision making in the realm of the audio experience, but guys, really? Let's not go back to the zoomed out senior photo shoot. I know I'm being a little pissy but god damnit, I'm giving a bad album art work review! LIKE IT! You know half the music sites won't give bad reviews because they are worried about the bands labels not liking them? I'm not worried. I don't care. All in all, the music is great. Bare Wires are an awesome band. This LP is what you've been looking for this year. I bought it and my vinyl player is broken. Shoot me.

Nac/ Hut Report - 9th Overflowing...Milky Slaughterhouse...Dream Of Incubator

I just checked my email for the first time in 7 months. My bad. So here is a band that sent me their LP. I've given it a listen and I like it a lot. Here's what they sent me:

I quote, " We're Nac/Hut Report, a polish-italian band. We've released some material for the american label RCP Tapes and an EP in 2009. Actually we just finished our first LP, and we decided to not release it on label but to spread it for free through the web."

I don't normally try and describe music like this because I feel like I'm being a twat when I do so, I'm going to leave it at this: This Lp sounds a lot like they are inspired by a fellow Itailian, Riz Ortolani - He's the badass that composed the soundtrack to Cannibal Holocaust and Good Bye Uncle Tom. I'm a big fan of Italian film and this Lp pays omage to the Italian Sound. It's good. Listen to it.

Fungi Girls- Turquoise Hotel

I'm partial to bands from Denton, Why? I live there 4 days out of the week. It used to be you could go to Denton every week, check weshotjr and go to a house show... not really the case anymore. The kids who hosted the shows moved out and on with their post-UNT college lives and with them left the medium in which the garage scene thrived- the byob/p venue. It's not completely over though. Play Pinball is running a little vinyl label out of their house, Bad Sports is playing at Rubber Gloves, and every once in awhile the Majestic Dwelling of Doom will put on a show that is good. Fungi Girls aren't really from Denton- they are from Cleburn, a small town in DFW. But, Denton was their town of choice for a time, at least until they graduated from high school. Last time I talked to them they said they hated Denton, maybe that's true, maybe they were just bitter.... no matter the case they are a great band that I first saw in my favorite town.

This Week: Bay Area

I'm in the bay area this week and it's pretty alright. It's a bit uppity and over crowded but, other than that it reminds me of a huge version of Austin being that there are tons of shows, bars, venues, beer, pizza and sun. First things first The Spits and Nobunny show at Bottom of the Hill, and then Friday in Oakland at the Fuzzplex: Personal and the Pizzas. Good Shit. Im leaving Saturday so I'm missing Ty Segall and bare wires which sucks but, no big.

I've been away from this blog buying a new computer because all of my equipment was stolen over in Austin at SXSW. This movie is great- It's half Pieces and like the cover says half hostel. Although, It's not as brutal as hostel the cine and score along with the excellent plot is worth checking it out. Get to netflixing or buy it at tartan.

Rusted Shut is a Houston hardcore noise band on the Dull Knife Label. Hot Sex was recorded in the late 90's but I guess they decided to make a come back and so released this. I saw them play earlier in the year at SXSW at Sound on Sound. I swear it was the most awkward show I've ever been to. The best way to describe it would be, when I walked in I looked to my left and to my right and I thought....In ten minutes only one of those people will be there. Drummer Domokos has another band Future Blondes which has a split with another Houston native band, Indian Jewelry. Other than that Future Blondes has a cassette.... which you will only ever get to sample through the exclusive email list (plug).

Highly recommended.

Lia cook was being exhibited in the University of North Texas's light-well gallery this weekend and I was lucky enough to get a chance to see it. To be honest I don't know Lia, and I had never heard of cook at all but as a one time UNT student I felt an attachment with being there looking. I guess wandering around looking at the works there always makes me a bit proud to have been there for even just the short time. Anyways, Lia Cook is a professor of art at the California College of Arts and Crafts and has a long resume of exhibitions and professional work to back up her reputation. Highly recommended. "Ok, so the first of a series of interesting (non-baile) Brazilian releases that you can download for your xmas/new year’s entertainment. Here we have “Charque Side of the Moon”, which is Floyd’s proto-ambient classic covered by musicians from the city of Belem in the state of Pará in Amazonia.The “charque” refered to in the title is a type of beef jerky that is eaten but is also an affectionate name for the female genitalia, hence the charming cover.

The project was put together by Luiz Félix, guitarist and vocalist of the band La Pupuña, who basically had the idea to redo the album but with a strong “paraense” influence and the album has contributions from fifteen members of the paraense music scene. Perhaps most interestingly it has the vocal talents of Gaby Amarantos – a technobrega singer from the band Tecnoshow, on “The great gig in the sky”

“Time” also has some nice heavy percusssion from the carimbó group, Os Baioaras, and “Any colour you like” has merengue percussion, for you music anthropologists out there.

The idea of redoing “Dark Side Of The Moon” is not an original one. The has of course been“Dub side of the moon” by the Easy All Stars, but here it has a distinct Paraense flava, a sound which starting to come into its own now and is worth investigating further."- man Recordings

These are not my words. I wish they were. It's the best review I've read in a long while. I snatched it off the Z-Gun blog which I just found. I dig their zine, always god stuff in there, tons of reviews, and such. I know lately I've been "borrowing" everyone else's words but If I didn't I'd sound retarded (more so).

"The Mayyors make Chrome sound like a bunch of stockbrokers playing top 40 covers at a wine bar, Lake Of Dracula sound like a pre-teen cheerleading practice for religious youth, and Black Flag sound like candy-assed kids. I played their first single in my apartment and it vaporized the roaches, cleaned the refrigerator, paid my bills, added a tasteful patio, and made my elderly landlady explode like Andrew Robinson at the end of Hellraiser. I played it for a homeless guy and all of a sudden he had a monocle, spats, a Bentley, and a butler named Jeeves. I played it for a bald friend and he sprouted a giant pompadour right in front of me. I played it for my dog, and now he has a part-time job at Denny's. I played it in a graveyard and all the corpses clawed out of the ground and started doing the monkey. If this was a fair and just world (note: it is not), this release would have been heralded from on high, the Mayyors riding in a the Popemobile through a ticker-tape parade while grown men wept and screaming nubiles tore out tufts of their own hair and threw their undergarments at the band, instead of their impact being reserved for unkempt, socially maladjusted single people with clothes that smell faintly of urine and who enjoy blogging about records, as if their thoughts carried any economic heft (note: they don't). On Deads, the Mayyors upgrade their scuzzy fidelity for a bit more sonic space, but its not them eating caviar and thumbing their powdered noses at you, its more like giving a painting a gentle nudge to make it flush with the walls, so its presented the way the artiste intended. The skittering clouds of insectoid noise and the guitar that sounds like a UPS truck backing up in a bad acid flashback remain, just with a bit more breathing room. Four tracks on here, all of 'em sound like the middle ground between a controlled avalanche demolition and dissonant sonata fed through a feedback loop, and all of them are home runs. Holy shit. –MB"

This is my favorite band/record this year. They are so great. Happy when being disturbed, disturbing while being romantic...too good. "Hailing from sunny San Diego, California, Christmas Island plays music that on the surface is happy and poppy. There is a dark undercurrent to their brand of lo-fi pop punk--it is joyous and almost twee while secretly depressed and deeply disturbed. Citing Tronics, Urinals, Television Personalities, The Clean, Versatile Newts, and The Fall as influences, Christmas Island is Beach Boys-style, sunny Southern Californian pop by way of the late-'70s / early-'80s UK DIY scene... the band has a subtle charm that mixes sunny California harmonies with a nod toward the garage in the vein of Kiwi poppers like The Clean."

This isn't the world's most unique album and I don't think it has to be because in this LP you will find that what these south floridians did was fix junkie noise and make it more than just catchy. It's very poppy, its very indie, its alright. I'm a bit scared this is the way modern garage bands are going to sound and thus ruin the aesthetic...I mean by that, listen to this record and I swear it sound exactly like if Flake Music came out with a second album oh wait they did....by the name of the shins...well...alright.

This album, Wizzard Sleeve, stems from the same aesthetics that Mobile's underworld exhibits and the music is case and point. Haven't done too much research yet on the scene in mobile but if there's anything else like this, I think there may be some hope for Alabama. Anyways, here's a much better despription of the record than I can write from Hozac:

G.G. King- Last of the Night Wiggers Cassette

Pretty nice tape from G.G. King. This demo seems to be G.G's more psychedelic noise side compared to the songs from the Adult Rock 7" which were in my opinion a bit more poppy. 'The Letter' is my favorite song on here...even if it is a box tops cover, they did a great job on it. The opening track is really great...very druggy, very paranoid, instant classic. One of the best this year.

"Essentially the last Carbonas line-up minus Dave on drums and switching instruments a bit. Six "ruff" demo tracks, and they're all really good (well...except the cover of "The Letter"...), definitely a decent couple of singles here. "Babbling Voices" and "Head in the Clouds" touch some slower and sleazier punk moments than the Carbonas did, "Drug Zoo" is right up there with any of their catchiest cuts, "Flowing Robes" is practically a crossover song (I'm talking about the metal/hc crossover you idiots...) and "Witching Hour" is catchy garage-trash. I felt really bad about the Carbonas bust-up, but I feel a whole lot better knowing GG is down there in ATL still carrying the torch."- Terminal Boredom

Abe Osheroff

I recently picked up a small book by a professor at UT campus called, "An Interview with Abe Osheroff" by Robert Jensen. It's a great piece of literature, although reading a 40 something page interview might put some people off. I was going to scan the book and .pdf it on here, but luckily I already found a link to the entire book online through the third coast activist website. I just started reading it but it already has me interested. Osheroff is very straight forward, and his tone throughout is that off a wise old man full of all the knowledge only a life like his could produce. I really enjoy Jensen's approach to the interview, especially the opening dialogue over authenticity and what it means. I highly recommend checking it out for yourself...at least read the first section past the intro on the third coast activist site and see if that gets you hooked. If anyone wants a hard copy of the book let me know through email or on the board to the right. Thanks.

Anyways, This is what I've been listening to lately in the soul/jazz genre. I'm also a big Mingus fan. I need to get some actual vinyl. No excuse. Check out Nina, I think this is a good place to start.
